I don’t think I have loved a K-drama as I did from the get-go as much as I did for Descendants of the Sun for a long time, and that’s a good thing of course, meaning this drama is heading off in the right direction. I am just so surprised with how quickly I fell for this drama. This drama is just amazing and already is filled with so much punch in these first three eps. This drama is not without its flaws though, but it starts off so spectacularly well that whatever flaws it has, it all seems very minuscule. I am just loving this drama very much and can’t wait to see what it has in stores for us, but regardless of whatever it has, it will hopefully be something that brings the drama to greater heights.
Without a doubt what made me feel in love with the drama at first sight is the writing and execution. When it’s the backing story that carries the drama over the actor’s star factor, that is what makes a drama stand out from the crowd. The driving force of any drama should always be the writing because there wouldn’t be a drama if there was no back story and the actors are the ones who brings it it to life. When the story shines through the actors that is what a good drama is. For a lot of dramas, this may be the case but usually it does not occur until a few eps into the drama, however, for DOTS, it shows from the very first ep and I really like that. It just brings you right into all the action of the drama and that is something I love so much about this drama, especially because the drama itself is quite an action intense drama. The execution of this is just amazinggggg! The cinematography is just beautiful, visually appealing and delivering in quality that takes your breath away. The colours used makes the drama really pop, but not in that bang sort of way, rather in a nice, subtle way. It’s a nice muted khaki set with navy hues and I think this complements the military aspect of the drama very well.
The romance here between Captain Yoo Si Jin (Song Joong Ki) and Doctor Kang Mo Yeon (Song Hye Kyo) gives me the tingles because it’s a cute romance yet one that is very mature. It’s love at first sight for Si Jin who fell in love with her the moment he laid eyes on her while for Mo Yeon, she fell for him soon after. He wasn’t afraid to take the first step and win her heart despite her having a not-so-good first impression of him. But he got through to her because before she even knew it herself, she had already started falling for him. I just love them; they’re sophisticated and mature adults and have cutesy-sexy flirtatious conversations with each other. Not to mention, Joong Ki and Hye Kyo have a nice chemistry with each other which really helps them in portraying their respective characters and character’s relationship.
They just click with each other, with physical, mental and emotional attractions with each other, but because of his duty callings, he got dispatched abroad before he could even fully purse a relationship with her. But all is good, because fate has given them another chance to be with each other, away from homeland in Urk. Si Jin and Mo Yeon have contradictory duty callings – he can and will kill to keep peace while she will do anything in her hands to save a life. However, their contradictory duty callings in life will be of something that will only bring them closer together. They’re both highly ambitious people and professional people with too much on their plates for them to just dabble here and there with their romance.
Aside from the main couple, I am also adoring the secondary couple, First Lieutenant Yoon Myung Joo (Kim Ji Won) and Sergeant Major Seo Dae Yong (Jin Goo), whose romance is anything but like Si Jin and Mo Yeong who are in the fluffy stages of their relationship. Myung Joo and Dae Yong are in the more mature stage of their relationship but it is currently very rocky. Already, we can see that they are both very fond of each other but because of particular reasons they inevitable went down this road with their relationship. They, like Si Jin and Mo Yeon, are both also highly ambitious and diligent people and I’m curious to see how they will handle their relationship on top of everything else that they have to face in life.
Aside from the romances, the camaraderie between Si Jin and Dae Yong is pretty sleek too. It is the kind where they will go to all odds to defend each other and they are the type of people who will defend their subordinates and protect them at all costs. I really like the mutual understanding between two men and how they are able to work so seamlessly with each other, such as when they were chasing the thief in ep 1.
These first three eps have all been breath-taking one way or another and are all filled with an intensity that keeps you wanting more. Solid foundation laid for this drama and I really can’t wait to see more of this drama and hopefully it will only keep getting better!
